Types of Scarring

Acne is a common condition, in which the hair follicles which have become congested with dead skin cells and oil. Bacteria also contributes to inflammation in acne formation.

Scarring is most commonly seen in those with cystic acne: when dead skin cells and oil form deep within the hair follicle and under the skin creating painful pockets of pus and pimples on the surface. For some women who get acne during menstruation, birth control pills may help to control it. However, those with cystic acne are candidates for acne treatment.

For men with higher testosterone levels, acne may also be a serious problem as it stimulates the production of sebum (oil). . Sun damage may also cause acne, as the body builds a stronger outer layer to protect itself from radiation, and incidentally makes it harder for dead skin and oil to leave the body.

Despite the common misconception that acne mainly affects pubescent teenagers, adult acne can persist for some even into their 50's. Some people even experience acne for the first time as an adult. This is especially common for women going through menopause, who are more likely to experience adult onset acne than men as they may deal with discontinuing birth control, great influx in changing hormones, and increased stress. Skin care is vital to help treat these conditions, and scarring can be treated as well.

All types of acne, both adult-onset and general, are known to cause "Boxcar Scarring", which causes the skin to stretch beyond it elastic limit as it responds to trauma. Despite common belief however these scars are NOT PERMANENT! Here at DFW Youth Secret, we specialize in treating scarring and can help you both control acne and the marks it leaves behind.

Treatment Options

DFW Youth Secret offers a variety of skincare products such as Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid to help you combat acne and provide a glow to your skin. These products paired with some moisturizers and vitamin C to aide in healthy collagen production that creates firm, acne-free skin.

Chemical Peels treat the outer layer of scar tissue to reduce discoloration and the appearance of scar tissue. There are many types of chemical peels used to reduce lines and wrinkles and reinvigorate the skin tissue, giving our patients firmer, smoother, and healthier skin. There are mainly three types of chemical peels: superficial, medium, and deep peels. Safe acids, including  glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and trichloroacetic acid, are often used to exfoliate and eventually peel off the old skin to reveal healthier skin that has grown in its place. These acids not only treat the scar tissue, but also effectively handles any skin discoloration that may have occurred as a result of scarring. Peels usually take 14 days to complete, during which the patient's skin is sensitive to sun exposure. The treatments may be repeated 6 months later depending on the patient's needs. The timing is inconvenient, but well worth the effort for even-colored and gorgeous skin. For those wishing to avoid needles and desiring an affordable treatment, Chemical Peels are a great option.

For scar tissue that has created indents, dermal fillers may be needed. Dermal Fillers use a natural occurring chemical in the body - Hyaluronic Acid - which is injected into the affected area. This is one of the most experiential safest procedures used to restore ones beauty to what it previously was in the past. The treatment is hypoallergenic, accurate, and biodegradable, and effectively invigorates and stimulates your body's collagen response to the appropriate level. However, as such a treatment utilizes ones own body chemistry, the results may not be seen for a period of a few months as the body will need time to break down  the chemical and heal the affected area. The effects and healing processes are predictable and effective as a long term solution to for a variety of skin conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring.

LED Light Therapy is a peaceful, non-invasive procedure that is very effective at stimulating new skin cells, fighting bacteria that causes acne, and minimizing marks of aging. In addition, it evens the color of your skin and treats the effects of sun damage. This painless treatment has been used by NASA to grow plants at an accelerated rate! In addition, this therapy has been found to provide many anti-ageing properties. LED light therapy is a great option for those wishing to treat both the acne and the scarring it may have left behind in the past.
